Indonesia Rapid Gender Assessment in Response to COVID-19
Following the first reported COVID-19 case in Indonesia, Yayasan CARE Peduli (YCP) had immediately started to prepare its response package to support communities in areas where it operates. Given the mobility restriction, it had been quite challenging to prepare the response package particularly in preceding the response with much more detailed field-based needs assessment. This Rapid Gender Assessment (RGA) was prepared almost simultaneously with the delivery of the first stage of the response. While it has been limited in its use for the first stage response, it is intended to guide YCP’s next stage of response which will be aimed at mitigating the social economic impact of COVID-19, emphasizing the needs of women and access to the support. This RGA will serve as the basis for further in-depth study or assessment to support detailed design of the support schemes and other assessments that other development partners are planning to undertake.
Information on the local situation and needs were gathered from the projects’ database and information from the local governments and partners. Therefore, the first stage of YCP’s response consist of preventive and protective measures from the virus transmission which was aimed at the communities in general.
Specifically, the RGA has the following objectives:
1. To analyze the impact of COVID-19 and the needs of the communities especially the vulnerable groups such as women and children, the elderlies, people with disabilities and other vulnerabilities;
2. To inform the design of COVID-19 response based on the identified needs of the different groups, focusing on: (i) paid and unpaid productive works; (ii) gender relations and decision-making process; (iii) basic services; (iv) safety and security with respect to gender-based violence; (v) influence of faith and religion; (vi) access to information and technology; (vii) WASH and livelihood; and (viii) child protection and education. MALAWI COVID-19 RAPID GENDER ANALYSIS
Coronavirus disease (COVID-19), an infectious disease caused by a newly discovered coronavirus has had a devastating impact globally. While WHO declared COVID-19 as a world pandemic on 30th January 2020, Malawi declared a state of disaster on 20th March 2020 and this was followed with some restrictions including closure of schools. While countries in Southern Africa have imposed lockdowns and other restrictions, as of 7th May Malawi was yet to go on lockdown, which was stopped through a court decision. Malawi is in an election period for fresh presidential elections and with the campaign period officially opened, observance of COVID-19 safety and preventive measures will be a challenge.
Global research findings have shown that COVID-19 has significant social and economic impact on people, especially those living in poverty-stricken countries. Malawi is at more risk due to other significant health challenges that would exacerbate the severity of COVID-19, such as high levels of malnutrition, malaria, anemia, HIV/AIDS, and tuberculosis.
For women and girls, the impacts can be much higher due to their social responsibilities as primary caregivers, coupled with childcare and nutrition and farm work. Further a majority of health care workers are female (especially nurses). In Malawi, the nursing profession is dominated by female nurses of which 91.5% are professional and 84.7% are associates . With the Covid 19 response, there is also an increased risk of exposure to the infection for health care workers, particularly if health care services are not provided with adequate Personal Protection Equipment (PPE).

Étude sur les filières porteuses des communes de Beaumont, Jérémie et Roseaux
Diagnostic & Development Group S.A. (DDG) a été recruté par CARE Haïti pour réaliser une étude sur les filières porteuses dans les communes de Jérémie, Beaumont et Roseaux, dans le cadre du projet d’Appui à la Sécurité Alimentaire, au Renforcement Agricole et à l’Amélioration Nutritionnelle dans la Grand’Anse (ASARANGA), implanté par CARE, Action Aid Haiti (AAH) et Konbit Peyizan Grandans (KPGA).
Une approche mixte, c’est-à-dire combinant des techniques de collecte de données quantitatives et qualitatives, a été adoptée pour réaliser l’étude. En plus de données secondaires, essentiellement obtenues dans des rapports d’études pertinentes, des données primaires ont été collectées, au cours des mois de juillet et août 2019, via une enquête de ménages, un inventaire d’associations et de coopératives, une enquête de marché, des groupes de discussion avec des planteurs et des entrevues individuelles avec des représentants d’institutions financières dans les trois communes d’intérêt.
Nous avons étudié huit filières pour les sections communales cibles des communes de Jérémie, de Roseaux et de Beaumont. Il s’agit des produits vivriers igname, manioc, banane et le haricot ; le maïs, l’arachide et deux filières d’exportation traditionnelles : le café et le cacao. Le processus de sélection a tenu compte du nombre de planteurs qui pratiquent ces cultures, de l’importance de la filière dans la sécurité alimentaire et l’environnement et enfin de leurs potentiels de revenu.
