ENAWO Response Narrative Report

On 7 March 2017, the tropical cyclone ENAWO affected the north-east coast of Madagascar in the village of Ampahana, 20 km to the north of the district of Antalaha. Classified in category 4, it struck the island with an average wind of up to 203 km/h and gusts of 300 km/h. It then crossed Madagascar before exiting to the south, by joining the Indian Ocean on 9 March 2017 (see map trajectory). ENAWO brought violent winds and torrential rains that have caused severe losses and damage. The wind and the generalized floods have resulted in the destruction of shelters, roads and other infrastructure, as well as of agricultural crops. Project to Strengthen the Most flood-Vulnerable Communities of the Urban Commune ODA Final Report

Final 29 page report at the end of the project’s 18 months of intervention, the completion rate for the activities planned exceeded 95%. Sensitization using radio and TV spots were the only activities that were not 100% completed, as they had to wait for the National DRR Communication Strategy developed by BNGRC1 that was finalized only this year.

The highlights of the project include two simulation exercises and the organization of exchange and sharing visits under the leadership of BNGRC, which involved the Region of Analamanga, the 6 districts of Analamanga, the Urban Commune of Antananarivo, the Urban Communes (Mahajanga, Toliara, Toamasina, and Morondava), the Peripheral Communes of CUA2, the 6 arrondissements, the 75 intervention Fokontanys (as actors and observers), and some DRR actors such as Handicap International and GIZ. Resilient Livelihoods for the Poor (RLP) Baseline Report Cohort 2

RLP is a pilot initiative that seeks to roll out a poverty alleviation strategy at the household level in two equal recruitment phases bringing in a total of 1,200 extreme poor households. The first recruitment phase or “cohort” was originally programmed to occur in late 2014 but was held-up until mid-2015 due to the absence of signed MU at the SPSL and IP levels. Cohort 2 is to recruit a further 600 households and will follow relatively rapidly behind the first cohort, meaning that the delays experienced with the first cohort, will be considerably reduced with the second recruitment of extreme poor households to RLP.1 Most second cohort recipients will come from the current three districts, although CARE will complete its approximate 200 recipient households in the new district of Moulapamok. RLP has three major series of activities providing: 1. Funds for the purchase of income generating assets; 2. An asset supporting monthly allowance (stipend) that should enable newly acquired and valuable assets to be properly cared for; 3. Training and mentoring by village level facilitators, working for the three IPs, in the care of those assets and the development of micro-enterprises based on the assets and the skills acquired. Protections and Choice for Marginalised Urban Women (PACMUW) Final Report

47 page endline report of PACMUW project, which was implemented between July 2013 and June 2017 with AUD $1,272,061.00 funding from CARE Australia under the Australian NGO Cooperation Program (ANCP). The PACMUW project was designed to address multi-faceted vulnerabilities of key MUW in Laos – specifically for entertainment workers, factory workers and domestic workers in three districts of Vientiane Capital. PACMWU builds on previous programs and focuses on three thematic areas – legal protections, gender based violence and health (nutrition and sexual and reproductive health), as well as strengthening the motivations and skills of relevant duty bearers.

The Protection and Choices for Marginalised Urban Women (PACMUW) Project, funded by the Australian Department for Foreign Affairs and Trade’s Australian NGO Co-operation Program (ANCP), is being implemented by CARE International in Lao PDR in Vientiane City, over a 4-year period. The project purpose is: To strengthen the capacity of local groups and implementing partners to lead development actions for stronger protections and positive choices among marginalised urban women. Tamil Nadu Flood Recovery Project Final Report

In 2015, Tamil Nadu witnessed torrential rainfall and subsequent flooding in many of its coastal districts as the North East Monsoon intensified. The flood caused large scale damages to public and private infrastructure, properties, housing and assets resulting in loss of livelihoods for hundreds of thousand people and loss of 470 human lives. It was declared as ‘calamity of severe nature’ by the Government.

CARE was one of the first humanitarian agencies to be on the field to support the flood-hit communities. Poor households in Cuddalore, Kancheepuram and Chennai city were extended with required relief support to tide over the difficult circumstances caused by flooding. Subsequent to the relief support, CARE formulated a proposal to extend support for recovery for some of the worst affected families in the Kumaratchi block of Cuddalore district. CARE launched the ‘Tamil Nadu Flood Recovery Project’ with the support of BNP Paribas, a renowned corporate in financial services.

Ghana’s Strengthening Accountability Mechanisms (GSAM) Project 2nd Year Annual Report

The Ghana Strengthening Accountability Mechanisms (GSAM) Project” is five year social accountability project which was formulated by the Government of the United States of America through its development agency, USAID, in collaboration with the Government of Ghana. The project focuses on strengthening citizens’ oversight of capital projects to improve local government transparency, accountability and performance in 100 districts of Ghana.
The implementation of the GSAM project directly contributes to intermediate results; IR 1.2.1 “increased capacity of CSOs to advocate on behalf of citizens for improved government services’’; and sub IR 1.2.2 ‘‘strengthened CSO and National Audit Authority oversight of government services’’ under USAID/Ghana Country Development Cooperation strategy,- Strengthened Responsive, Democratic Governance. Complementary Basic Education (CBE) Project Baseline Report

CARE International Ghana is among the group of implementing partners delivering an annual cycle of the Complementary Basic Education (CBE) Program in Ghana which is providing to a pre-determined number of out-of-school children aged 8-14 years with access to an accelerated numeracy and literacy program in their mother tongue and targeted to their needs, and to thereby enable them to acquire the basic knowledge and skills required for admission to formal education. Over the past two years, CARE delivered two cycles of the CBE program in collaboration with the District Assembly and the Education Directorate to serve more than the expected 11000 OOSC. CARE reached out to 11771 out of school of children (OOSC) in over 200 communities within Sekyere Afram Plains District in Ashanti Region, and West Mamprusi and East Mamprusi Districts in the Northern Region of Ghana. The results show that at least 90% of the above OOSC were able to complete the CBE program and also transition into the formal school in September 2015 and 2016.
